Stacey Abrams, Dems rally around pastor in burgeoning Georgia Senate race

Rev. Raphael Warnock, the senior pastor at Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, announced Thursday he is running for Senate in Georgia and received an immediate endorsement from the state’s Democratic rising star: Stacey Abrams.

Warnock on Thursday morning became the most prominent Democrat to join the race to complete the unexpired term of GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson, who resigned at the end of last year due to health concerns. Democrats quickly began rallying around his candidacy on Thursday, including Abrams and a number of other national figures in the party.

The special election is an all-party contest in November, with a January 2021 runoff if no candidate tops 50 percent. GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler was appointed to the seat by Gov. Brian Kemp and sworn in earlier this month.

Abrams’ endorsement is a major boost for Warnock out of the starting gates. Democrats hope to consolidate support around a single candidate in the race, particularly after Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) launched his bid against Loeffler earlier this week, creating a major rift among Republicans.
